Direct Messaging, provider to provider, works the same as email, but with the addition of secured encryption of the body of the message and any attachments. This encryption enables the standard email protocol – which is unsecured – to be used securely to send and receive messages protecting patient information.

Upgrade Coming Soon

In the coming months, GLHC will transition all Direct Address participants to a new web application. This transition will allow GLHC to continue providing a HIPAA compliant and efficient application for years to come. There will be no interruption in service during this transition.

Ambulatory organizations have a choice on what their Direct Address will be in the new application. Please review the choices below and let your GLHC Implementation Consultant know your decision!

Option one – Keep your organization’s unique Direct Address

This option allows you and your organization to keep your unique Direct Address and sub-domain. A sub-domain is the text immediately after the “@” sign in an email address but before misdirect.net.

For example, a pediatrics office named First Pediatrics might currently have the Direct Address of First.Pediatrics@FirstPediatrics.midirect.net. As GLHC transitions to a new Direct Message management web tool the organization’s Direct Address stays the same, First.Pediatrics@FirstPediatrics.midirect.net.

Examples

  • Pediatrics@HopePediatrics.midirect.net
  • Gastroenterology@DowntownGastroenterology.midirect.net
  • Internal.Medicine@WestsideInternalMedicine.midirect.net

Details

  • Yearly maintenance fee of $500.
  • Continued seamless delivery of Direct Messages.
  • Seamless transition to the new Direct Message management web tool.

Option two – Change to the GLHC standard style of your unique Direct Address.

Great Lakes Health Connect is adopting a standard format of Direct Addresses. Addresses that are in the GLHC standard format have the same sub-domain. A sub-domain is text after the “@” sign in an email address but before misdirect.net. The standard sub-domain is “MichiganHISP”. The Direct Address will still be unique to your organization.

For example, a pediatrics office named Second Pediatrics might currently have the Direct Address of Second.Pediatrics@SecondPediatrics.midirect.net. As GLHC transitions to the new Direct Message management web tool the organization can choose to change to the GLHC standard format. The organization’s Direct Address would change to Second.Pediatrics@MichiganHISP.midirect.net.

Examples

  • Pediatrics@MichiganHISP.midirect.net
  • Gastroenterology@MichiganHISP.midirect.net
  • Internal.Medicine@MichiganHISP.midirect.net

Details

  • No implementation or maintenance fee.
  • Continued seamless delivery of Direct Messages.
  • Seamless transition to the new Direct Message management web tool.
  • Organization is responsible for notifying healthcare community of the change to the organizations Direct Address.

GLHC Direct Addresses

Other Direct Addresses

Great Lakes Health Connect (GLHC) publishes HISP (Health Information Service Provider) directories as a service to the healthcare community and for informational purposes only.  A listing in a directory is not a GLHC endorsement of the provider or the organization.  The directories are updated regularly, but GLHC does not guarantee accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of each directory. Direct addresses should always be confirmed before sending Protected Health Information (PHI) or other confidential information.  Use of the directories is authorized only to transmit patient information for treatment purposes; any other purpose is expressly prohibited.

To send and receive Direct messages, a HISP needs to be part of the Direct Trust Bundle or the HISPs need to have shared trusted certificated with each other. GLHC cannot guarantee the delivery of Direct messages sent to addresses listed within these directories.

If your organization would like to have a Direct address directory posted on the GLHC website please follow these steps:

  1. Download the Direct Address Directory Template
  2. Complete the spreadsheet – do not change the column order or make other formatting changes
  3. Save the spreadsheet in this format … Organization Name Direct Addresses MMDDYYYY
  4. Send the completed spreadsheet to Direct@gl-hc.org with the following information
    1. Organization Name
    2. Finalized Date
    3. Contact Name, Title, Contact Information
    4. Approximate date of next update
