#RealworldHIE 2018 Recap

The #RealworldHIE blog series highlights the many different ways that organizations use health information exchange (HIE) solutions. These organizations are building connections across their communities and the state, reducing the time required and financial burden of exchanging health information, and most importantly providing the right patient care and experience at the right time based on the best available information.

Here is what HIE looked like in the real world in 2018.

Urology Associates of Grand Rapids, PC has been helping patients throughout Western Michigan since 1968. When their providers recognized the need for greater access to patient information in order to continue providing excellent care, they chose to work with GLHC. They knew that GLHC would keep the project on task and would coordinate with their EMR vendor.

West Michigan Law helps to assure that their clients Health Care Power of Attorney Documents are available to health care providers by contributing to the GLHC Virtual Integrated Patient Record. Registering these documents with GLHC makes them available (only as appropriate) to a statewide network of hospitals, primary, specialty, and allied care organizations. Honoring patients’ wishes and treatment plans improves their care experience, reduces stress on the patient’s family, and cuts down on unnecessary or unwanted treatments.

Community Mental Health for Central Michigan (CMHCM) promotes community inclusion and whole-person wellness. The CMHCM team began working with GLHC when they identified a necessity to see their patient’s lab results and encounter information from area healthcare providers in real time. Brian McNeill, CMHCM Chief Information Officer, commented, “We save time and money because of VIPR. Less redundant tests are ordered and our staff spends less time sending requests for information to hospitals and waiting for faxes or phone calls to be returned.”

Cadillac Family Physicians is a primary care practice committed to providing a total patient centered experience through compassionate and personal health care. One valuable information technology asset used by staff is the GLHC Virtual Integrated Patient Record (VIPR). One of the benefits they have realized is that “using VIPR also helps (the) practice be environmentally friendly. We save paper by being able to input records directly in our electronic medical record system.”

Located in Northern Michigan, the AuSable Valley Community Mental Health Authority (AVCHMA) envisions a future where consumers achieve physical and mental health sufficient to empower them to achieve their dreams and desires for greater independence, greater personal responsibility, and full participation in community life. AVCMHA investigated many HIE solutions when working to meet State of Michigan requirements. They chose to work with GLHC because of the existing relationships that GLHC has with other organizations in Northern Michigan, and because of their ability to work well with PCE Systems, their electronic health record system. AVCMHA leverages three GLHC solutions: Direct Messaging, participation in the Active Care Relationship Service (ACRS) program, and the Virtual Integrated Patient Record (VIPR).

There are many many, many, MANY more examples of real world health information exchange being used in the real world to enhance care and reduce cost.
